DJANGO FESTIVAL ALLSTARS
Featuring Samson Schmitt, Ludovic Beier, Pierre Blanchard, Antonio Licusati, & Francko Mehrstein

Django’s unmistakable cool and jumpin’ jole de vivre have made him an icon for an unlikely range of luminaries from Carlos Santana to Eric Clapton, guitar greats! Jimi Hendrix named his “big band of gypsies” in tribute, and Willie Nelson adopted his influence in “country-swing.”

The Django Festival Allstars have grown into a brilliantly cohesive group of star musicians who’ve taken America by storm, performing at top concert halls and festivals to standing ovations. They’ve appeared at SFJazz, Kennedy Center, Birdland for 25 years, Dizzy’s and Rose Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Keystone Korner Baltimore, Hollywood Bowl, Montreal Jazz Festival and Arts Centers Kimmel, Strathmore, and many more, including Carnegie Hall.

The music speaks of Paris in the 20s and 30s when “gitane” music filled the air, in the cafés, the streets, in the countryside, a romantic Paris with lovers, campfires, a time of Montmartre, la belle époque, le Boudon café, café au lait, luscious pastry, and a great glass of wine. Django was “king”. He teamed with Jazz Violinist Stephane Grappelli and made musical history.

The Django Festival Allstars bring this music to ‘today’… combining known standards and original music…intoxicating!! They swing like crazy and will break your heart with a ballad. Their Special Guests have been Randy Brecker, Joe Lovano, Veronica Swift, Regina Carter, Cyrille Aimee, Ken Peplowski, Madeleine Peyroux, Sefon Harris, James Carter, to name a few.

The Django Festival Allstars bring the music of the legendary Gypsy Jazz Guitarist Django Reinhardt fully into the 21st century. Their unique, high energy performances pay tribute to Reinhardt, who is considered one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Reinhardt’s driving, swinging style became known as “hot jazz” and it continues to grow in popularity throughout the world—in great part to the success of The Django Festival Allstars, who honor the traditions of this “gypsy Jazz,” adding their own interpretations, arrangements and original compositions, all with stunning virtuosity!
This internationally renowned group prominently features one of Europe’s greatest musical families – guitarist / violinist Dorado Schmitt and his two sons Samson and Amati. The band also features virtuoso violinist Pierre Blanchard and accordionist extraordinaire Ludovic Beier. On rhythm guitar, DouDou Cuillerier, who brings the house down with his scat singing. Francko Mehrstein is also on rhythm guitar, with Antonio Licusati and Gino Roman on Bass.
The Band performs at top venues across the US, including The San Francisco Jazz Festival, where they are a crowd favorite, The Playboy Festival at the Hollywood Bowl, The Montreal Jazz Festival, The Kennedy Center, The Dakota in Minneapolis, Scullers in Boston and many, many more. Their home in the US is New York City’s Birdland, where they perform twice a year, in the midst of criss-crossing the country on tour, where they continue to perform to sell-out crowds and standing ovations.

“THE BEST JAZZ SHOW IN TOWN!” – Wall Street Journal
