In her 6th decade as an artist—and as prolific as ever, having released her 55th album earlier this year—Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Judy Collins is taking a rare moment to look back on her landmark 1967 album, Wildflowers. The cultural icon will perform an exclusive concert bringing to full bloom her chamber-folk masterwork supported by the Cain Park Chamber Orchestra. The show will also feature Judy’s most beloved songs from her decades-spanning oeuvre.
In 1966, Judy Collins’ not-yet-famous friend Leonard Cohen stopped by her apartment to play her his new song, Suzanne, and ask her a question. Judy had released five albums in five years and released her first charting single, Hard Lovin’ Loser, earlier in the year. What Cohen wanted to know was why Judy wasn’t writing her own songs.
It was a question that changed the direction of her career. That same day, Judy sat down at her Steinway and wrote Since You Asked, which became one of the three original songs on her milestone 1967 album Wildflowers.
Wildflowers went Gold and reached No. 5 on the Billboard Pop Albums charts. Its version of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now earned Judy her first Top-10 hit and her first Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance.
On May 20, 2023, Judy Collins, accompanied by a full 27-piece orchestra, will present Wildflowers in its entirety to a Cain Park audience. Her performance will also highlight selections from her six-decade, 55-album career.
The Cain Park Chamber Orchestra, performing in support of Ms. Collins, is courtesy of Music Talent of Cleveland and comprises world-class musical artists that call Northeast Ohio home.
It will be an evening you’ll never forget.
