   Synopsis

Theater

To thousands of Greater Clevelanders, the name Cain Park brings back memories of fragrant, balmy summer nights under the stars, sitting on stone risers in the amphitheater and stealing kisses while troupes of ardent young actors gave it their all in summer stock productions. It was a place where young people spent their summers moving props, singing in the chorus, practicing their plies and painting scenery for the gigantic stage - all the while learning indelible lessons about theatre and stagecraft. One of those young kids was the late David Shaber, whose nostalgic recall found expression in his screenplay, "Those Lips, Those Eyes," which United Artists filmed in 1979 at Cain Park with Tom Hulce in the starring role as a stage-struck young actor caught up in the romance of summer stock and Frank Langella as the bored and cynical veteran.

Back in the 1930s, Cain Park attracted national attention with its ambitious "10 shows in 10 weeks" credo. Today, in addition to programming that includes the best in national, regional, and local music and dance, Cain Park produces a musical theater production in the intimate Alma Theater. The Alma Theater also hosts the Alma Cabaret series, which showcases new and established performing talents in an intimate setting.

NEW IN 2009
Cain Park celebrates the talents of Cleveland playwrights with presentations of new works during PLAYWRIGHTS WEEKEND June 19-21 in the Alma Theater at 7pm:
  • Fri June 19 - DROWNING THE FLAME by Michael Oatman
Rival Hip Hop artists struggle to win the affection of a successful Hollywood actress.

Bacharach meets the Beatles and Algernon takes center stage in this witty, playful modern-day musical homage to Oscar Wilde.
  • Sun June 21 - BON VOYAGE, NATE by Steve Maistros
Surprising feelings emerge when a well meaning but lousy grief counselor leads a workplace session in this dark comedy.

And cast members from past and present Cain Park theater productions reunite for a special benefit evening of songs, STARS OF CAIN PARK, on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at 7pm in the Alma Theater. Tickets are $35 (no discounts).

I have been coming since it opened when I was a junior high student. I painted scenery, was in shows, held book, did props, etc. so there's a lot of sentiment. Also I love the setting and the programs are all high quality.
