COME TO THE RIVER: AN EARLY AMERICAN GATHERING
Friday, June 25, 2010. Evans Amphitheater, 8pm. General admission: $25 in advance (Patron Series $21.25 available only at Cain Park Ticket Office), $28 day of show. [buy tickets]
The hit crossover program by Apollo's Fire that drew sold-out crowds last year now appears in a fresh new version for Cain Park! Jeannette Sorrell’s reminiscences of growing up in the rural South inspire this musical journey of the soul. Appalachian percussive dancer Matthew Olwell joins the ensemble of wooden flutes, fiery fiddle, and a quartet of colorful characters, including Cain Park favorite Sandra Simon. Sparks are set flying with hot-shot hammered dulcimer player Tina Bergmann, whom Pete Seeger calls “the best hammered dulcimer player I’ve heard in my life.” The troupe passes from barn dances and murderous ballads to an old-time Revival meeting, with folk hymns like 'Down in the River to Pray,' made popular in the film O Brother, Where Art Thou. The Plain Dealer described it as 'fresh, impeccable and enchanting.' Supported by WKSU 89.7 FM, WCLV 104.9 FM and the National Endowment for the Arts.
