GroundWorks Dancetheater returns for a sixth season of 'smoldering brilliance' (Plain Dealer) that embodies new dance outside the traditional fare. GroundWorks is rooted in exciting collaborations with new composers and the innovative choreography of artistic director David Shimotakahara, recipient of OhioDance's award for outstanding achievement.

Live music, an important element of many GroundWorks performances will be prominently featured in this year's program. Shimotakahara will premiere a new work with composer Gustavo Aguilar and area jazz luminaries Howie Smith and Rock Wehrmann. GroundWorks will reprise two works from its abundant repertory. The duet, Migration, created in 2001, will be performed live by composers Gustavo and Gaelyn Aguilar. The lush score weaves seamlessly through this fluid and dream-like work choreographed by Shimotakahara. GroundWorks pays tribute to an American classic, Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun, with Annie Redux, a spirited and clever take on his music and lyrics as re-imagined by David Parker from the BANG Group in New York.

One of the most celebrated dance troupes in the world for more than five decades helps Cain Park celebrate its 70th birthday! The Paul Taylor Dance Company has toured in more than 60 countries spreading the idiom of modern dance in a witty, often profound and surprising style. Its founder has been heralded as the greatest choreographer in the world who creates 'dance that's food for the eye.' Paul Taylor has been lauded as the greatest storyteller working today in contemporary dance even though his works don't have narratives: his dances are full of stories because he creates works about the world as he sees it in a ballet style blend of artistic and gymnastic.

FREE MODERN DANCE CLASSES with members of the Paul Taylor Dance Company on Saturday, July 19 in the Red Rehearsal Hall of the State Theatre (1650 Chester Ave.) Registration is required by calling 216-348-7909. Advanced students 11am-1pm. Professional Dancers and College Dance Majors 1-3pm. A Master Class attendee will be able to purchase a $33 ticket to the Cain Park performance for only $10. Sponsored by the Playhouse Square Education Department.
